Just a quick post. Saw this clip from This is war, I really like the contrast between the dark background and the bright high key focus on the artist. I find it really emphasises on the artist while also giving a more high quality appeal. Also I really like the soft pastel tones used.Sunday, 30 June 2013

Stealing the hype
I noticed while watching the 3oh!3 - double vision video they had incorporated other trends and crazes into their video.
In October 2001 Daft Punck realeased their song "Harder Better Faster Stronger" in 2007 a video was uploaded to YouTube of what was to be name "daft hands" and consisted of the lyrics written on the fans hand and they would show each word in time to the music. This video has received over 56.8 million views.

This then developed and the craze "daft bodies" began. (Skip to 1:45)
By incorporation other viral crazes it increases the chance of a music video going viral itself. Also the sense of familiarity is positive to the audience and is easier to relate to, it reduces a level of confusion.

Types of music videos
There are three main groups music videos are categorised into, like practically any other media product many videos will consist of elements from more than one category but essentially have one focal group.
These groups each have their own effects and elements which often are more suited for a given video depending on the genre.
Performance based videos
These videos are often used by very well known artists, typically a pop based genre. Due to these videos being focused around showing the artist in effect this creates a hype around the artist and makes their appeal look higher and more powerful.
Colourful background and/or outfits are often used to highlight this attention, particularly female artist will be shown in extravagant minimal outfits which stand out.
Examples of performance based videos:
Jessie J - Wild
Little mix - How ya doin'
Narrative based videos
The focus around the storyline and meaning around the lyrics of a song effectively makes it easier for the audience to relate to the song. Complex songs with hidden meanings can often be understood clearly through its video. These video types show a greater emotive side to the artist, this allows the audience to relate to them and develop a more positive relationship with the artist as they are less intimidating and are shown as equal to the audience in some aspects.
Examples of narrative based videos:
Linkin Park - Numb
30 seconds to mars - This is war
Concept based videos
The very creative element of a concept video allows them to stand out from others. By standing out so clearly and being so unique it opens the opportunity for songs to create hype and even go viral. However these videos are very risky as it could go one of two ways: viral and great success, or great tailored.
In the state we live in today the media industry is become more are more limited in variety- films particularly, concept videos deliver that variety and fresh element to audiences and are essentially more enjoyable to watch hence why they often are so successful.
Examples of concept based videos
3oh!3 - Double vision
Oren Lavie - Her morning elegance

INTRODUCTION
My name is Helen Arblaster, this is my blog for the Media A2 course. My chosen area is the Music Videos.
This blog will intentionally show the planning towards my video and clearly explain what and how I have chosen to do and most importantly why i have done this and how it is relevant to music videos.
Along with the music video we have also been set the task to create a promotional package for the album which consists of a digipak for the album- the album cover and back along with a magazine advert to boost the promotion.
I am really exited to do this task, initially I had hoped for the horror film trailer but feel that the music video is a better choice now as it will be a lot more interesting to study and is something which is more dynamic and can be tailored to fit many different industries of work.
Over the next few months i will begin to look at existing music videos and study what features they use. Also i intend to look at previous years examples from other schools (as our school has not done this course before) for inspiration as to what concepts work best.
